How to Identify Tyre Damage

Before deciding to repair a tyre, it’s crucial to conduct a full assessment. Here’s what you should look for:

  • Insufficient Tread Depth: If the tread depth is less than 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the tyre, it’s no longer safe to repair.

  • Secondary Damage: Any damage caused by the object that punctured the tyre may prevent a safe repair.

  • Ageing or Deterioration: If the tyre is old and the rubber shows signs of cracking or deterioration, it’s likely no longer repairable.

  • Bead Damage: If the tyre bead (the edge that seals against the rim) is damaged, the tyre may not seal properly, preventing a safe repair.

  • Exposed Cords: Visible steel cords indicate significant tyre wear and often require replacement.

  • Faulty Previous Repairs: Any previous repairs that were poorly executed could lead to further damage.

  • Sidewall Damage: Damage to the sidewall of the tyre typically makes repairs unfeasible.

  • Bulging: Bulges indicate internal damage, making the tyre unsafe to repair.

Our Puncture Repair Process

At Tyre Vortex, we follow a thorough and transparent repair process to ensure your safety and satisfaction. Here’s how we approach every puncture repair:

1. Detailed Inspection

Our expert technicians conduct an in-depth inspection of your tyre, checking for issues such as tread depth, damage from puncturing objects, sidewall issues, and more.

2. Professional Assessment

After the inspection, our team evaluates whether the tyre is safe to repair. If we determine the tyre can’t be repaired, we’ll offer replacement options.

3. Expert Repair Techniques

If the tyre is repairable, we follow industry-approved methods to carry out a safe, long-lasting repair. We strictly adhere to British Standards and international guidelines, ensuring every repair is carried out to the highest safety standards.

4. Quality Materials

We use only the highest quality materials for every tyre repair, ensuring that your tyre’s performance is restored to its optimal level. This commitment to quality guarantees not only a longer-lasting repair but also improved safety and reliability on the road.

5. Final Checks

Once the tyre repair is complete, we conduct a series of final checks to confirm that the repair is effective and safe. This includes ensuring the tyre is properly seated on the rim, pressure testing the tyre to check for leaks, and confirming that the tyre is balanced for smooth and safe driving.

FAQS:

Are Mobile Puncture Repairs Safe?

Absolutely, if done right. We strictly follow British Standard BS AU 159 for safety. Repairs are limited to the central ¾ of the tyre. No ‘string’ repairs here – we prioritize your safety over shortcuts.

Is Your Puncture Repairable?

A puncture less than 6mm in diameter within the safe zone? We can fix that. But if there’s sidewall damage, visible bead wire, or distorted rubber, it’s time for a replacement. ‘V’ and above-rated tyres? One repair is the limit.

Can All Punctures Be Repaired?

Unfortunately, no. See that red ‘T’ area? We repair within that for safety. If your tyre shows any of these: splits, cuts, low tread depth, or prior non-standard repairs, it might be time for a new one.

Repair Guidelines

To comply with UK safety standards, Mobile Tyre Surgeons will only repair a tyre if it fits the following criteria:

  • The puncture has occurred in the repairable zone highlighted in green
  • The puncture has a diameter of less than 6mm.
  • There is no evidence of internal or sidewall deterioration including splits, cuts or blistering.
  • There is no other puncture within the immediate area of the tyre.
  • The entry angle of the object allows for safe and proper seating of the patch.
  • The tyre is in an otherwise roadworthy condition.
